UW-Fond du Lac to discuss organ donation as part of public discussion forum on Nov. 5

Posted 10-27-2009.—The public is invited to join the UW-Fond du Lac campus community in a discussion of the complex and multifaceted issues surrounding organ donation during a special forum at noon on Thursday, Nov. 5 in the University Center Commons, 400 University Dr., Fond du Lac.

The discussion forum is being held in conjunction with the presentation of the play “The God Committee” by Mark St. Germain Nov. 4-8 in the Prairie Theater by the UW-Fond du Lac Theater Department. In this play, a healthy heart is available for transplant and the hospital’s transplant selection committee must meet to decide who should receive it.

Faculty members representing various disciplines will lead the discussion on the ethical, political, sociological and biological aspects of organ donation. Scheduled to participate are Eric Boos, philosophy; Richard Gustin, communication/theatre arts; Elizabeth Hayes, biology; Maggie May, mathematics; Valerie Mumm, world languages; Michael Nofz, sociology; Donald Schwartz, political science; and Lee Watson, physical education.

Gina Glinksi from the UW Health Organ Procurement Organization along with former Marquette University men's basketball special assistant Trey Schwab, a double lung recipient, will be joining the discussion along with representatives from St. Agnes Hospital.

Gustin says that many students will have had the opportunity to see the play “The God Committee” the night before this forum and should have a lot to discuss.

“It will be wonderful to have so many faculty and their students involved in educating and discussing such an important social issue combined with our fall production of this play,” said Gustin. “ The students in the cast of ‘The God Committee’ have had an up close and personal look at the ethical, political and interpersonal issues surrounding organ donation and the medical professionals involved who make life and death decisions. It’s been quite an adventure.”

Show times for “The God Committee” are Nov. 4-7 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 adults, $5 students, UW-Fond du Lac students free on Nov. 4 only. Purchase tickets at (920) 929-1111 or at the door.
