UW-Fond du Lac names Kaplan

Fond du Lac, Wis. –The University of
Wisconsin-Fond du Lac has named its 2008-09
Kaplan Award recipients. Through this award,
individuals or teams are recognized for
significant and innovative improvement in
instruction and service to students.
Carolyn
Polodna, business professor;
Paisley
Harris, history professor and
Mike Jurmu,
geography/geology professor share the award for
their work on the Global Warming Symposium which
was a two weekend event held at the campus in
spring of 2009 featuring experts from throughout
the state of Wisconsin. “Global Warming:
Wisconsin and the Great Lakes Region” explored
the issue of climate change and human impact on
that process from the interdisciplinary
perspective of atmospheric science, climatology,
philosophy and ethics, political science, law
and business.
Frances
Perkins, communication and theater art
professor, was recognized for incorporating the
writing and directing of a film which describes
the college student experience with test anxiety
into a student learning experience.
The film “Test Day”
was a unique opportunity for UW-Fond du Lac
students to work side-by-side with film industry
professionals as cast and crew members.
This award honors Arthur M. Kaplan, who
retired in 1993 as vice chancellor of the UW
Colleges. Kaplan was committed to improving the
quality of instruction and service to students
at the UW Colleges’ campuses.
Recipients of the award receive a $250 grant
that can be used to further enhance their
creative approaches to education. The
UW-Fond du
Lac Foundation provides a matching grant.
UW-Fond du Lac is one of the thirteen
campuses of the UW
Colleges which are, collectively, the
freshman/sophomore liberal arts transfer
institution of the UW System. Kaplan Awards are
presented at each of the thirteen campuses.
