UW-Fond du Lac Theater Department’s spring play DOUBT presented March 11-15

2/25/2009 - The UW-Fond du Lac Theater Department will present the 2005 Pulitzer Prize winning play “Doubt” March 11-15 in the Prairie Theater, 400 University Dr., Fond du Lac. Show times are Wednesday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m.

“Doubt” was written by John Patrick Shanley who received an Academy Award nomination for the movie version of the script. The play has also received four Tony awards including Best Play.

The plot involves a strong-willed Catholic nun and charismatic priest, who see their responsibilities very differently.

“They clash over the suspicion of an inappropriate relationship with a student,” said Richard Gustin, UW-Fond du Lac communication and theater arts professor and producer/director of the play. “It is a superbly written story and will keep the audience riveted and guessing until the final scene.”

Gustin adds that the production is a powerful interplay of human emotions full of empathy for all sides. “This play is sure to both entertain and provoke important discussion.”

The eight-member all student cast includes Robin Speidel as Sister Aloysius Beauvier, Luke Scorcio as Father Brenden Flynn, Briana Gens as Sister James and Kelly Wright as Mrs. Muller. The understudies are respectively, Alana Berthiaume, Casey Fiebig and Cathy Weber.

“I tried for a couple of years to get the script, but was unsuccessful,” said Gustin. “We finally received permission to perform the work this year which, coincidentally, was the same time the film was released and received numerous Academy Award nominations.

“The play is a great actor’s piece and addresses a timely social issue. We see almost weekly a news item dealing with the controversial topic of priest abuse in the Catholic Church.”

Advance tickets are $10 adults, $5 students. Tickets sold at the door are $2 more. UW-Fond du Lac students can attend the opening night performance on March 11 free. Groups of eight or more receive a $2 discount per ticket.

Purchase tickets in advance at the UW-Fond du Lac Business Office (M-F, 8-4:30 p.m.) or by calling (920) 929-1111.

“Doubt” is the second production by the theater department in recognition of the 40th anniversary celebration at UW-Fond du Lac.
