UW-Fond du Lac presents music student recital on May 8

5/4/2009 – Original composition and solo works by University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac music students will be performed at a special recital to be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8 in the Prairie Theater, 400 University Dr. The public is welcome to attend this free event.

The evening will include solo performances by applied music students Mike Toshner on guitar (student of Mike Bautz); Jennifer Bell, Andy Senecal, Joe Birschbach and Catherine Weber (voice students of Grace Jones), accompanied by UW-Fond du Lac music lecturer Melissa Martiros; Mark Thompson (student of Scott Elford), percussion; Jennifer Jacobs and Jennifer Bell (students of Helene Schrankler) on piano; and Jenny Jacobs (student of Steve Schani) on viola.

New to the program is a chamber music component coached by Martiros for soprano, viola and piano. They will perform “My Garden” by Elizabeth Haskins.

The program will include original compositions by students enrolled in the Music Theory II course taught by UW-Fond du Lac Music Professor Dan Rager.

“The original composition is a class assignment in which the students apply theoretical knowledge to performance practice,” said Patricia Eby, UW-Fond du Lac music professor and associate dean. “Students compose the pieces following common practice period composition guidelines, create a musical score using the computer program ‘Finale’ and find musicians who will perform the pieces and rehearse with the ensemble.”

Original compositions include “New Moon” by Jennifer Bell; “The Groove” by Mike Toshner; “Fudgeadelic” by Nathan Schultz; “The Moody Waltz” by Jon Scott’ and “Little Angel Don’t You Cry” by Cathy Weber.
